ARI requirements for international families.

The ARI regime remains available to third-country nationals, but it should be assessed as a residence, investment, family and compliance decision.

Who can apply

ARI is intended for third-country nationals who perform an eligible investment activity, directly or through a company where the legal framework allows it.

AIMA notes that ARI does not apply to Portuguese nationals or to citizens of the EU, EEA, Andorra and Switzerland.

Main benefits

  • Entry into Portugal without a residence visa.
  • Residence and work in Portugal.
  • Schengen circulation without a separate visa.
  • Family reunification possibility.
  • Potential future permanent residence and naturalisation, if legal requirements are met.

Eligible routes

  • Creation of at least 10 jobs.
  • Scientific research capital transfer of EUR 500,000 or more.
  • Artistic production or cultural heritage support of EUR 250,000 or more.
  • Eligible non-real-estate funds of EUR 500,000 or more.
  • Portuguese company investment with job creation or maintenance.

Decision alerts

New real-estate routes were removed by Law 56/2023. The decision should confirm the route, capital risk, documentation, family members and tax impact before any financial commitment.
